Childcare Health Consultation Program

The YMCA Community Services Childcare Health Consultation Program provides health, safety and behavioral health consultation, resource and referrals to childcare centers as well as family-based childcare providers caring for children 0-5 years of age.

The consultation team consists of Public Health Nurses, Health Educators and Behavioral Health Specialists who provide their services via phone consultation, on-site observation and through community advocacy and linkages in both English and Spanish.

Role of Health Advocates
The Public Health Nurses and Health Educators provide consultation services and training related to health and safety issues. Health Educators assist the Public Health Nurses in educating the public by providing childcare staff training and offering supportive services to the childcare community. Services include the following:

  • Phone Consultation: Primarily consists of providing health and safety information, resources, and referrals to the childcare community.
  • On-Site Health and Safety Assessments: At your request, we will come to your location to provide an assessment of how your program meets the health and safety needs of children.
  • Staff/Provider Training (in-service): We provide training and workshops at your request on topics such as hand washing, disease prevention, and identifying common childhood diseases.

Role of Behavioral Health Specialists
The Behavioral Health Specialists provide consultation services and training on topics such as managing children with challenging behaviors, accommodating special needs, and strategies to support positive behavioral change. Services include the following:

  • Phone Consultations: We provide behavioral health information, support, resources, and referrals to childcare providers.
  • On-Site Child Observation: We offer on-site observation of the child’s behavior in the childcare setting to help you develop an action plan that works more effectively with the child.
  • On-Site Program Observation: At your request, we will help develop and implement positive modifications to create the best environment possible for the children in your care.
  • Staff/Provider Training (in-service): We provide training and workshops at your request on topics such as managing children’s challenging and aggressive behaviors, effective communication with parents and children, and working with children with special needs.

The Childcare Health Consultation Program is provided by the YMCA of Orange County’s Community Services Branch and made possible by funding through Proposition 10 and the California Children and Families First Commission. This new resource helps to ensure that Orange County’s children enter school healthy, developmentally on target, and ready to learn. This service is available to childcare providers, agency personal, health professionals and parents, at no cost.

City Guide Handbooks Available

Recognizing the need in Orange County for more quality child care facilities and services, the County of Orange Social Services Agency (SSA), in collaboration with the Orange County Child Care and Development Planning Council, has prepared a first-of-its-kind guide to assist in the development of a large child care home or a child care center.

"In a commitment to service and quality child care in Orange County, we have created a product that will tell you the whats, whens and hows of starting a business in child care," said Larry Leaman, SSA Director.   "These guidebooks will offer potential child care providers with invaluable information."

The two volumes entitled, The Process of Starting a Child Care Center in Orange County and The Process of Starting a Large Family Child Care Home in Orange County will answer very specific questions regarding the development of a new child care center or the provision of child care from a private home.   Until now there has been no single point of reference for anyone proposing to go into the child care business.  These guidebooks document the requirements of each city and jurisdiction.    Anyone interested in obtaining a copy ($10 each volume) can contact the Orange County Child Care and Development Planning Council at (949) 548-3194.
